Catch the Impulse Shopper –  use Point of Sale and get your share!

Whilst the economy is in a spin consumers are doing all they can to shop with control ‘avoiding temptation’. So much so that the supermarket visit may only be a visit to specified aisles, sticking to a budget and buying only the basics and what is on their list. Despite this there is also evidence that this is not working and regardless of the positive well meaning  attempts at frugality and self-control the shopper is failing due to the age old fact that we ‘act on our emotions and rationalise them later’.

Shoppercentric conducted two studies into impulse buying the first one in 2008 and the second in August this year. It found shoppers are more impulsive than ever before – and that the number of grocery categories that a shopper buys from impulse actually increased by a third since 2008.

Frivolous and fancy free? Far from it; buying on Impulse in these tough times is now an indication of Smart savvy shopping Opportunism – spotting a bargain that genuinely saves the customer money. Big ticket items are particularly affected as consumers will hold back on larger items until they are at last prompted to purchase when a clever offer of sales tactic persuades them to buy.

So what do brands need to do to up the anti for Impulse buying of their products? Aside from spending huge amounts upgrading store design to improve shopper positivity and making sure offers are prominently displayed you can use Point of Sale.
