The message is clear – ‘if you want to go for Gold you had better get off the starting block now!’ The 2012 Olympics is right on our doorstep – literally. A 64 day event held at over 35 venues with 9 million tickets available; the feel good factor is expected to dwarf that of the Euro 96 football tournament when retail spends went through the roof along with birth rates!
How big will this be? In terms of Retail Marketing for example, the new Westfield Stratford Olympic Village which houses a three story shopping mall with 1.9million sq. ft of retail space, is anticipated to receive 250,000 customers each day through the its doors. What is clear that there are prospects for everyone, with the extra influx into London, predicted to be upwards of 2 million visitors the opportunity is not to be missed.
Many brands are ramping up budgets to at least double which means the potential for the Point of Sale market in the UK is nothing short of huge. SPS are already working closely with brands including Coca Cola to prepare for what is expected to be the event of the century. Managing Director Toby Martin said,
“it’s a been a tough few years for retail, the 2012 Olympics is an opportunity not to be missed and with a significant additional spend available SPS look forward to showcasing our outstanding retail marketing expertise and innovation as part of the event”
